Annual Report of the South Manchester Numismatic Society for 2009-2010

Monday 21 June 2010

 Secretary’s report

During the season 2009-2010 we have held 16 formal meetings.  Average attendance at each meeting has been between 12 and 13 people, including guests and occasional visitors.  We are please to welcome three new members: Rob Pearce, Bob Shenton and John Ogden.

Although we have had only two guest speakers this year, both have been of high quality.  In March we welcomed Ian Jones to speak on Scottish medieval coins and in June Chris Leather gave an excellent presentation on Coins of the Gallic Empire, mixing knowledge and humour with consummate professionalism.

It as a testament to the expertise of our own members that several gave presentations during the past season, beginning in October with Andrew Andison’s introduction to the potential of the digital camera for taking photographs of coins.  It was followed by a demonstration by Geoff Thomason of a digital microscope as a tool for examining and photographing fine details of coins.   Later in the season we heard Roger Nixon on coins of Elizabeth I and David Holt on those of later Henry VIII and Edward VI.  We are particularly grateful to Peter Crummett for stepping into the breach left by an indisposed speaker and treating us to an illustrated presentation on historic Manchester at very short notice.

Thanks are also due to Keith Sugden, who once again proved an expert auctioneer at our auction in May.  Congratulations to Denis Martin, winner of the Colin Cooke Cup, Rob Pearce, winner of the Challenge Cup quiz in April, and to Geoff Thomason and Roger Nixon, who came joint second representing the club at the Inter-Counties quiz at Crewe in June.
